Let me specify this from the beginning. I like Fallout 76. Yes, I liked it in an interesting way. Normally I act cruel, but I won’t be one of the people who shame Fallout 76 on online. Of course, I'll write down all the problematic issues, but I will write the good sides of the game too because it needs it after all the lynching campaign that started online.
Fallout 76 review
Now, the Fallout series has to have a unique atmosphere, an interesting magic that attracts the player. We had the chance to experience this spell from Bethesda. Fallout began to appeal to much wider audiences with Fallout 3 and with New Vegas, the game series came to a head, and the success of the Fallout 4 was successful, but it failed to meet some expectations. Nevertheless, after Fallout 4, which made Bethesda happy with sales figures, we encountered Fallout 76 announcement in a way that we did not expect in the previous E3. Personally, although I'm a fan of the series, I was not interested in 76 because I was so hyped for Red Dead Redemption 2. I didn't even watch the proper gameplay video until the game came out.
We were done with Red Dead Redemption 2 and the Fallout 76 was released at that moment. I did not have much expectation about the game, so I was not involved in the lynching campaign, I opened the game with zero expectations, I started playing Fallout 76 when I did not know almost anything about the game. And after a week of experience, I realized that I couldn't make sense of the lynching campaign. You ask why? Let's find out.
Now, Fallout 76 is the first game in the Fallout universe. In other words, all the games that have come up so far have passed many years after the bombs exploded and the world returned to hell. Fallout 76 is about the members of the shelter number 76, which will rebuild the United States in a very short time after the bombs exploded in the Fallout universe.
Because Fallout 76’s in-game time period is earlier than the other games, the destruction we encounter is much lower than we are used to. We are confronted with so much greenery and natural landscapes that we are not used to seeing in the Fallout universe. From a visual point of view, this situation offers an interesting experience. This situation, which supports the feeling of discovery, can be slightly different and distant to the classic Fallout fans. So the game may not be for the classic Fallout fans.
The size of the map is at a level we can call colossal. We are facing a map that is 4 times the size of the map of Fallout 4. To be honest, the open world is so detailed that it arouses the feeling of discovery in players, sometimes you may even want to muck around when there is not anything around. Personally, my favorite part of Fallout 76 is its map. Whether you play alone or with friends, Appalachia has been a great place to visit.
What about the mechanics of the game?
We can say that the online Fallout game which everyone was waiting for is now here with Fallout 76. But not exactly the way we expected. Fallout 76 has a structure that allows both PvP and PvE mechanically. As a player of great importance to PvP, I felt great shortcomings here. For example, if you attack a player you encounter in the open world, you only apply 5% of your total damage capacity unless he or she responds. If the player responds, the battle begins with your full potential. But fighting with other players has almost no contribution to the game. There is nothing to lose for the dead player. Even though Bethesda has indicated that they will make significant improvements to the PvP side with future updates, PvP is not enough for the moment.
On the PvE side, pleasant moments await us. With the players in your group, you can hunt big creatures, explore, complete tasks or even improve your own camp. Although this situation is able to impress you in the first hours of the game, it can become dull after 20-30 hours. Here again, the ball is in Bethesda’s court, and with future content updates, the CO-OP potential of Fallout 76 can be seriously successful.
In the open world of the game, there are many different activities. Wherever you are on the map, you have the opportunity to make Fast Travel to events that held in the game. With different players participating in the same event, you can complete the event and receive prizes. Although these awards sometimes seem to be really worthwhile, sometimes you can feel running your head against a brick wall. The chance factor is really important here.
The story of the game, as I have mentioned in the beginning, puts you in the position of someone who is assigned to rebuild the United States. However, there are no NPCs except for robots and some artificial intelligence. More precisely, there are no human NPCs. Perhaps the effect of this on the game reflects a sense of loneliness as Bethesda intended. Although it is pleasant to know that every person you see around is a real player, you want to see the Raiders, Brotherhood, and so on in such a big world.
In general, you get the story missions through audio recordings and notes you find in the open world. Likewise, when you make a discovery, a sound recording or a note can take you to a side mission. In side missions, you have a high chance of finding special equipment, weapons. This situation leads you to discover. As I have already mentioned, the world of the game is quite suitable for exploration.
On the side of the mechanics, I can say the game is the same of Fallout 4. You feel like you're playing a new DLC of Fallout 4. The only serious difference is the VATS system. When you activate VATS in previous Fallout games, time is slowed down or stopped, while Fallout 76 uses VATS in real time due to the online infrastructure. That's why I can't say that we use VATS throughout the game. However, this system could not work in an online game in any other way.
On the graphics side, I can say the game is the same of Fallout 4, again. The game developed with Creation Engine, unfortunately, it looks like a previous generation game. Fallout 76 is still quite flat and uninspiring even though volumetric lighting has been added. It's time for Bethesda to build a new engine.
On the side of the voices, the music brings us to a retro atmosphere. The music, embellished with old songs, was one of my favorite things of Fallout 76. Weapon sounds, voices, and atmosphere are much more successful than graphics. You can hear the distant conflicts clearly and wonder what's happening there. Bethesda made a good job on the music side.
Last words for Fallout 76
Long story short, players who want to experience the online Fallout universe atmosphere can love Fallout 76 but I am not sure about the classic Fallout fans. There is a serious lynching attempt at Fallout 76 on the internet. I think it's a little too unfair to the game. I believe that it will be a really good game with future updates in the future, although it doesn’t deserve the price. If you get the opportunity to buy the game with a nice discount, I recommend you to buy.
