Tropico 6 Review

The question of why people like to play video games has more than one answer. However, when we think about it, we can figure out that the main reason is we can do a lot of things in the virtual world that we are not able to do in real life. Some of the game genres can be the answer to this kind of dreams. Especially, running a company in Tycoon games, controlling an era in Civilization games and being a dictator in Tropico games.

Speaking of dictators, in Tropico 6 there is no obligation to become one. You can become a leader that respects democracy, human rights and gives a lot of hugs. However, due to its nature, Tropico pushes you to become more of a rough leader. If you be a good guy, the game will be much more hard to play. For example, you can’t kill or imprison your rivals but can bribe them. You need to be careful about not to get caught. Otherwise, things will become complicated.

First of all, let’s be clear that Tropico 6 is not a war game. It is a country management simulation that bases on diplomacy, politics, and city planning. The main purpose is to evolve our city named Tropico. In the meantime, there are also many groups with different opinions and ideas that live in your city. You need to get your back to the bigger countries in order to protect yourself from the outside threats and invasions.

Tropico 6 does not have a specific era. You can start from the 1800s to the present day. You start as a colonial state and in time you can become an independent country. Of course, your freedom will cost you. For example, if you want freedom, you will have to pay a lot of money to loyalty. You still have the option of declaring freedom on your own. But, we shall warn you that loyal army will knock on your door real fast. If you manage to become a country, you will struggle to option resources since the colonial state is over and no outside help will be delivered to you. Without outside help, it is really hard to manage. However, keeping the loyal family satisfied is one of the most difficult things in the game. That is why it is important to concentrate on the game while playing.

In Tropico 6, while your country grows, like other simulation games the needs will also grow. For example, at the beginning of the game, you will not need electricity in your cities. However, with the changing eras, electricity will become essential. So, you will have to start producing and delivering electricity to your people. Of course, there are more ways to create energy. You can use Nuclear energy, wind energy, and hydro energy to power up your country.

Beside from buildings and facilities, the game also includes technology tree. You can contribute to your country by developing different technologies through this tree. You can research nuclear power, richen your uranium, create a warhead and finish the cold war. Even big countries can be scared of you. You can also focus on military power in the game. With this, you can prevent coup attempts and stop rallies. Be nice to your generals to avoid coups and getting killed by your own soldiers (You know, the usual).

Tropico 6’s economy mechanics are very detailed and works well in the game. You can produce different types of recourses and sell them in markets or use them in international agreements. The main way to earn money is the economic system. If I have to give an example, you can focus on farming and then use the leather on clothing and import your items to around the world. You can use your jewel mines to get recourses from other countries. Every deal has an impact on the game. If you trade iron to Germany during World War 2, you will surely get the USA and UK very angry.

Tropico 6 uses Unreal Engine 4 this time. With its power, the games graphics performance is significantly improved. This makes the quality of the gameplay very nicely. The only bad thing about the graphics is that there is no day and night continuum in the game. It would have been nice to watch your city in the night all light up.

Sounds in the game are more than enough. Especially the dialogs and message voiceovers are nicely done. All of the interfaces are created with humor. So, this also adds another fun factor to the gameplay.Long story short, even though the game is not improved much from the old ones, new additions make the game more fun to play. If you are looking for a strategy game that makes you stay for hours, you should totally check out Tropico 6.
