Atomhawk Managing Director, Tim Wilson, says:

“Atomhawk has worked closely with NetherRealm from Mortal Kombat 11’s original inception through to its release and beyond. The team have created some incredible designs, having great fun playing with the time-travel mechanic that sits at the heart of the game. .”

The character art for the game included reimagining a broad selection of established characters from the series, as well as designing new additions to the roster. This was a creative yet challenging experience, with the Atomhawk team given a degree of creative control whilst needing to stay faithful to NetherRealm’s vision. Atomhawk was responsible for designing debuting characters Geras and Kollector, alongside returning fan-favourite Baraka and series veterans including Katana, Johnny Cage, Noob Saibot, Jade, Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Cassie Cage, Jacqui Briggs and Kotal Khan.

The fightline environments created by the studio spanned a diverse and striking set of locations including Shang Tsung’s Island, Kotal’s Koliseum and The Sea of Blood. Many of Atomhawk’s breakouts (interactable props) can be found in The Krypt, a puzzle-adventure that sits alongside the game’s main acclaimed story mode.

Wilson adds:

“The scope for Mortal Kombat 11 was to create the hardest-hitting, most intense game of the series so far. We wanted the design work to live up to these expectations, with characters and environments that could really bring the game’s epic story to life.”

Atomhawk’s involvement with Mortal Kombat 11 follows on from their concept and animation work from recent games in the franchise Mortal Kombat X (2015) and Mortal Kombat (2011). The studio also partnered with NetherRealm on the Injustice series.
