COVID Toes: Is it The New Symptom of Coronavirus?

Dr. Ebbing Lautenbach, the chief of infectious disease at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, says the lesions appear on the toes and sometimes on the toes, and looks like a sign that someone has the virus. He told USA Today that the lesions are “typically painful to touch and could have a hot burning sensation.”

“This is a manifestation that occurs early on in the disease, meaning you have this first, then you progress,” he continued. “Sometimes this might be your first clue that they have COVID when they don’t have any other symptoms.”

“COVID toes” in some people can disappear in the course of a week to 10 days, but others progress to respiratory symptoms, he said.

According to USA Today, the symptom appears mostly in children and adults and younger adults who would otherwise generally be asymptomatic.

There are two running hypotheses about what could cause the “COVID toes.” One possible explanation, Dr. Ebbing Lautenbach said, is that there is an inflammatory response more localized to the patient’s foot and toes, or it could be a blood vessel clotting. “The short answer is nobody knows,” he said.

Also, Dr. Jennifer Ashton, who is ABC News Chief Medical Correspondent, made a statement to the GMA (Good Morning America) about;  “COVID Toes” Could skin conditions offer coronavirus clues?
